A new beginning!!

A new begining in my 2014 Bouldering season.

As half of the 8 stage of the world cup were already done, and my results were not the ones I trained to, I decide to change a lot of things...

four big things have changed from this competition to now :

Firstly, As I said before, I start to work a lot on my flexibility, which is still really bad compare to Japaneese guys, or even Jan Hojer and Dmitri... I will continue these efforts until the world championships and hopefully I will be at the same level than the strongest boulderers of the world...

Secondly, since I live in Fontainebleau, I always wanted to climb at least one time a week in the forest. But with all these comps week end after week end, I was able to climb only one session between each comps, then I decide to climb on plastic in each sessions of the week to keep my good shape...

Thirdly, I just start to work with Christophe Bichet, Who is a really strong climber, but for me also the best person to do some mental training. And since we start to work together, I learn a lot of things about how to see the comps, and of course I learn how to be stronger and stronger in my mind... That's why I listen some music during the semi final round, to stay focussed on my climbing, and it helps me a lot compare to the moments I am discussing with the other climbers!!

And the last thing, which was a bad new for me, is that my girlfriend, Mel Sandoz, was not qualified in French team for these 3 upcoming events. On my side, even if it was really strange for me to change my routine in comps, it helps me to be really foccussed on my comps, one by one, without thinking about anything else... And it seems to work...

Toronto : First WIN since 2011!!!

Arriving in Toronto, I had good memories from last year, because I liked the style of climbing here, event if it is not my best style. And looking the final last year, with an unhappy 7th place remember me that it's always better to climb in final than to be in the crowd...
The gym in quite small overthere, but the crowd was fully packed of fanatic climber, and make a super atmosphere!!!
On the comp side, I had a good but tyring qualification round, making my new reccord of attempts, topping all of the 5 problems in a total of 20 tries!!!
In semi final, I was confident, and climb well in the first two problems. But the third one was in a super overhanging wall, and really powerfull. After 3 tries, I was totally exhausted, and so I was not able to climb this one, but also the last one because I was still pumped... At the end, I was not really happy of my climbing, and strategie, but my coach said me that I was 6th and so first to start in the final!!
In the final round, I was super confident after the observation, because all the problems looked quite in my style, and seemed possible... The only hard thing for me was the first jump (“skate”) of the first problem...
When I went out, I knew that these kind of problems were question of how many risk you can take in your tries... But as I am not so good in “skate”, it took me 8 tries to do the first part of the problem, and loose the second dyno at my last try...
The second problem was a normal, powerfull climbing, but it still took me 6 tries to figure out the first mouv, and did it!! After that, I was around 5th place, and the last two problem looked too soft to come back on the podium... But it was a mistake, the mantle of the third problem on a big green hold will be really hard...! But after my biggest fight I ever had in comp, I finally match the second hand on the top hold. This is the kind of attempt I am searshing by doing comps. The perfect combination between feeling, fighting spirit, and power...!!
Then the last problem looked quite esay, with a big mouv from two crimps to a jug, without feet... And I also flashed it with a great feeling of satisfaction!! Even with a bad start in the first two problems, I keep fighting with the problems one by one, no calculate how many try the others did, and this is for me what I am looking for in final round!!!
And surprisingly, when I went to my coach, he said me that if Jan fell one time, I will win.!! But anyway, this problem was in his perfect style, and will be easy for sure for him... And when he came out, He knew that he must flash it, and he did the mistake, failling at the first mouv, and did it soooo easily at his second try!!
Then it's my first victory since 2011, a really good feeling, really happy that all these years of training finally pay!!

Vail : Second podium in a row!!
After Toronto, we stayed few days in Boulder for some training sessions and a lot of rest...
Even if I was really tired from my final in Toronto, I did a good training session, with good sensation on the “american style”...
On Friday, lets go again, in Vail. And with my bad power endurance, my goal was to climb well and find the right beta straight at my first try. So I did a good qualification round being the only one to top all of the 5 problems...
In semi final, the presure was there, because if I wanted to defend my chances to be on the podium of the overall, and go to China, I must beat Rustam and Kilian, who are both super strong...
So I tried to stay focus on my climbing, and not think about the other. And with that, I was a bit nervous, but had the perfect idea of fighting against the problems in my mind... And it was not useless, because my two hands slipped together, and that two times in a row during my try in problem one!! And after my last boulder, someone say me that I had my ticket for the final, but if I have felt only one time in the first problem, I would be around 10th.
In final, my goal was still not done, because Kili was also here... I tried to keep my good feeling, and have a perfect start, flashing the first two problems, and get some 6 tries of advance on the second one of the ranking... But the problem 3 was a slab with small feet, and I don't really apreciate this kind of problem this year... I give my best, but couldn't do it. The good news was that Kili had only 1 top with several tries before the last problem, so I was sure to beat him and go to China two weeks later... The bad news was that Dmitri, Sean and Jeremy all did their third top in a row, so I am now fourth...
In the last problem, which was a corner, facing the crowd, followed by a really powerfull and overhanging finish... I find my beta, which was not the easiest, but works for me, and give my best, but felt two times at the end... Few second of rest later, it was my last try, and I was totally exhausted... give my best again... climb fast, fight with the gravity, and did it!!
And after this big fight, luckily, Sean and Jeremy couldn't complete the problem, and so I finished 2nd. So happy about my second podium in a row, but also because I already almost secured the third place of the Overall bouldering world cup, because Kilian and many more will not make it to China for the second time of the year...

Hayang, China : Podium again!!

For the China round, my goal was to take a lot of points for the overall, and then focus on "just" my climbing, and try to be on the podium again...
I had again a good qualification round, as I finish 1st, with 4 tops in 5 tries...
In semi final, I started last, and flashed the first problem of a really hard round. After the problem one, I speedly understand that it is enough to be in final, yeah... Then I give some good tries, but didn't top any other problem, and finish at the second place.
In final, the style was just about power, and I was really tired. I give my best, but only get some bonus holds, and finish 3rd due to a better ranking in semi... Still a really good result and I am happy to be on the podium again!!

Laval, France : 4th podium in a row!!

In Laval, even if I was tired from all these travels, I had a lot of expectation for that comp. As a French climber, it was the perfect opportunity to climb in final in front of a french crowd, but also to try to get another good result in a great comp!!
In qualification, I was really confident, and take a lot of risk in my climbing, and it works!! I finish first of my group with 5 flashes!!
After that, and sign around 1000 posters for the french students, it was time to rest for the semi...
In semi final, I felt really good, and confident. I start with some trouble on the problem 1, which was a really tricky mantle, and finally did it second go... Same thing in the second problem, I did it second go due to a bad beta on my first try. And I flash the last 2 problems, taking my ticket for the final!!
At this moment of the competition, as Dmitri loose the semi final, I needed to win to be second of the overall world cup... So the deal was clear!!

The first problem was looking like my best style (compression), but it was definitely too hard for me...
After that, I had a good finish, topping the last three problem, and even if I use some tries in the second one, where I needed to change one of my climbing shoes (It works with a stiffer one!!).
Only Rustam was able to climb all four problem so I get a new second place, just ahead Jeremy with two tops...
At the end, it was an incredible finish, with four french out of six climbers in final, and I think the show was really good, as usually in France!! haha!!
