Le Pied à Coulisse : 8C+ First Ascent

Here it is, after more than 20 sessions over 3 years of attempts, I finally completed my main winter  objective!!

Three years ago, we started brushing, cleaning, and trying the moves of this problem with Nico Januel. And we quickly realized that this line will be climbable.

This boulder is located at Rocher Gréau, in the city of Nemours. It's the same sit start as Chaos, but you quickly reach out through to the roof, to join a mantle on the left of the boulder. Some really powerfull moves, on good crimps, including some really strenuous body tension positions. Then, the mantle is for me the hardest and low percentage part of the boulder, where to succeed you must find the perfect body position...

I worked a lot on this mantle through the fall, to really maximize my chances of success on a day of great shape and perfect friction!
The start of the problem is quite conventional, but very physical and tensionny, in order to keep a single foot for most of the roof section.
A few weeks ago, I was in good shape before my trip to Switzerland, but was barely able to climb the line in two sections... Then came a good friction day, and I put three consecutive tries falling at the mantle, thinking that I had fallen in the last hard movement! That's when I understood that I could do it, and maybe quite soon...

When I came back from Switzerland, my main goal was to finish it off, but the weather wasn't good enough. Then, at the begining of the past week, feeling in a really good shape, I finally came back on it. And after warming up on the moves, I gave two really good tries, but fell at the mantle, higher than ever before, after where I thought I wouldn't fall anymore. I think it was a bit because I was scared by the 15 meters finish slab.

On my third go (the maximum number of try I can manage in a session), I wasn't feeling really good in the roof, but I fought like a bull, and pulled out the mantle!! After a good rest at the begining of the slab, I put myself together to finish the last part, and there I go! The the slab has some moves with no hand holds way up high, so you can't slip on the small feet without breaking something...

I decide to name this problem like that (Caliper, of "sliding foot" in french, go wonder...), because for me, this problem is just about keeping the left foot for almost the whole climb, and after that sliding around the rock for the mantle...

To give a grade is for me the hardest part. In fact, I have never been able to feel the grade of a boulder problem acurately. As a recent exemple, in Cresciano, I needed much more time to send La Boule (8A) than Confessions, 8B (I took it down in 20min).

Here in Font, I have more experience and I have done a most of the hardest problems of the forest. One thing is clear for me though : this problem seems to be of a new level of difficulty in the forest, a lot harder than the other things I have already done.

Also Nico who was very close to send it the first year, said it felt much harder than The Story of Two Worlds, a Cresciano classic 8C, one of the "benchmarks for the grade". I tried it briefly during my trip a few days ago, and actually think that I could have done it with a few more days there.

I will never say that I have climbed the hardest boulder in the world, but I think many things make it complicated. I hope that the bouldering "world" stars will come soon to try it, and I know that many of them arrive in the forest soon .. !!
